Poker is a card game with a lot of room for strategy. Each player gets five cards and the aim is to make the best hand with them. A round of betting takes place after each new card is revealed. In each round, players can call (put in more money than the previous player), raise or fold.

Each round begins with the player to the left of the dealer putting out chips equal to the amount put in by the player before them (call). Then, each player has an opportunity to raise the bet by at least double the amount of the previous bet – this is called raising. The player can also choose to stay in the hand and fold their cards if they don’t like their hand.

Beginner players often think about their own hands and what other people may have, but this is a mistake. It’s better to think in ranges and use your knowledge of what other people have done in the past when deciding how to play. Practice and watch experienced players to develop quick instincts. Over time, you’ll develop an intuition for frequencies and EV estimation, which will come naturally when you’re playing.
